Anxiety of flying: Top in flight strategies to tackle it
For years I have answered to the description of a pale-faced, grumpy, close-to-tears kind of a traveller beset by Anxiety of flying no matter how often I get to travel. Nothing seemed to work for me until I adopted these in-flight strategies to keep myself relaxed and happy.
Seek help - Most nervous flyers are ashamed to admit their problem before other people. Nevertheless, remember, cabin crew are there to help you. If you do feel extremely anxious or tense don't hesitate to seek help.
Once the aircraft starts taxiing, resist the urge to look out of the window or open the front panel to watch the screen displaying the runway and takeoff process. If you don't have the heart for it, best to avoid it. Instead, close your eyes and focus on some of the best places you have been to. Strong visualization is the key to getting over Anxiety of flying.
Happy visualizations - As you snap the seat-belt buckle in place don't think about mishaps and forcibly get that feeling of being chained out of your head. Drink a full glass of water and polish off a whole bar of chocolate if required just to make you feel good. Then, again force yourself to imagine your arrival rather than thinking about the take-off. While the cabin crew goes around making safety announcements and taking care of other things, force yourself to think of the happy arrival that awaits you. No doubt this will take considerable effort but it can be done. Perhaps you may not have been interested in this passage on fear of flying and acrophobia. Spot the right cues - When you're scared you often spot things that make you more scared. So, don't scan a newspaper with a headline talking of mishaps. Make all effort to spot the happy passengers around you. There are plenty of them as well. No point making eye-contact with other nervous fliers who are holding on to their arm-rests with teeth clenched. Look around and watch the happy children or other excited adults chattering away. All this will ease your Anxiety of flying.
Stay distracted - Take your ipod or mp3 player along. Even if long haul in-flight facilities give you options for music, it is better to take your own song collection along. In addition, if you have been using a self-hypnosis CD for easing Anxiety of flying, it is a great idea to hear it during the flight. Taking along a book of your choice is great too. It keeps you distracted from the tension of flying. Perfection has been achieved in this article on fear of flying and acrophobia. The crew handles hundreds of nervous fliers through the week and will not judge you so be honest with them. A comforting smile or touch can do wonders if you are tense. Anxiety of flying is no big deal. All you need to do is handle it right.
